The Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) announced that, based on plans prepared by the engineers with input from airlines, federally funded upgrades to Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport’s (PVD) secondary Runway 16-34 will soon begin a period of night construction to conduct work on the intersection of Runway 5-23 and Runway 16-34. During a 20-night period between Sunday, July 18 through Friday, August 13, 2021, Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport’s main runway 5-23 will be closed nightly at 11:00pm. Sunday through Thursday, and re-opened at 6:00am the following morning to allow for needed runway reconstruction.
Since the intersection work takes both of the airport runways at PVD out of service, engineering consultants prepared the schedule with great input from the airlines that serve Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport. To minimize disruption to travel, the engineers and the airlines have programmed nightly closure and morning re-opening of the airport’s main runway to avoid scheduled flight activity. There were no other options but to schedule this work when there were no scheduled flights. However, travelers who are scheduled to arrive in the late evening are encouraged to remain in touch with their airlines regarding delayed flights that may be seeking to land after 11:00pm Sundays through Thursdays until August 13, 2021.
In the event of a flight disruption, passengers should contact their airline directly for re-accommodation.

Federal funding of $27.6 million for design and construction of this project was made possible due to Senator Reed’s effort to provide an additional $1 billion in airport improvement funding in the fiscal year 2018 transportation funding bill, as well as the continued advocacy of all in Rhode Island’s Congressional Delegation. Completion of the runway project is expected by the end of 2021.
