The Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) today announced that federally funded upgrades to the Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport’s secondary Runway 16/34 have been completed, and the runway is expected to be opened to commercial air traffic on Tuesday, December 21, 2021. The rehabilitation project, which was managed by the Cardi Corporation and other local subcontractors, commenced in September of 2020 and was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.
Federal funding of $24.8 million for design and construction of this project was made possible through the successful efforts of Senator Jack Reed and the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation to secure an additional $1 billion in airport improvement funding in the fiscal year 2018 transportation funding bill.
During the period in which the airport’s secondary or “crosswind” runway was out of service for rehabilitation, the airport’s primary runway, Runway 5/23 was accommodating all flight traffic. When operational, Runway 16/34 typically accommodates approximately 20% of arrivals and departures, depending on weather conditions and consultation between pilots and air traffic control. As a result of the re-opening of Runway 16/34 local residents may notice a change in air traffic.
